Survey of Opinion In the Management Of Pleomorphic Salivary Adenoma
Objectives: Our study aimed to determine current opinion and experience relating to the management of pleomorphic salivary adenoma (PSA)amongst practising Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS)in UK and to evaluate the influence of clinical factors such as age at presentation and the influence of the histological diagnosis in transforming and malignant lesions. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to all the consultant members of the British Society of OMS in UK. Results: The data were desribed using frequencies distributions and cross tabulations. The response rate was 67%. 71% advocated superficial parotidectomy (SP)in children, 13% surgeons advocated capsular dissection in children. 75 out of 133 surgeons (56%) treated multinodular recurrence in older patients with surgery combined with radiotherapy, 44 (33%) surgeons would use surgery alone. In solitary recurrence, 105 (78%) surgeons would prefer surgery alone but 16 (12%) would use surgery combined radiotherapy. Conclusion: The postoperative radiotherapy was not advised for primary cases. Surgery combined radiotherapy was advised for multinodular recurrence and surgery alone for the solitary recurrence. This variation reflects the lack of evidence base for the management of this situation.
