Effect of New Fluoride Treatment on Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength
Objectives: Orthodontic patients are at an elevated risk for caries. 3M™ Clinpro™ Clear (CPC) Fluoride Treatment is available for use on teeth around brackets. The objective is to determine the effect of CPC on a) bracket bond strength and b) color of ceramic brackets. Methods: Products used were from 3M. Bovine teeth were pumiced and etched/primed with 3M™ Transbond™ Plus Self Etching Primer. 3M™ Victory Series™ Low Profile brackets (upper central) were bonded to the enamel using 3M™ APC™ Flash-Free Adhesive (APCFF, Grps.1-2), 3M™ APC™ PLUS Adhesive (APC+, Grps.3-4) and 3M™ Transbond XT Light Cure Adhesive (TBXT, Grps.5-6), n=10/Grp. 3M™ Ortholux™ Luminous Curing Light was used to light-cure the adhesives (Grps.1-2: 6-sec.mesial/6sec.distal; Grps.3-6: 3-sec.mesial/3sec.distal) according to IFU. Grps.1,3,5 were controls. In Grps.2,4,6, CPC (mint) was brushed on the entire tooth surface, up to the bracket, and onto the bracket base. Bonded teeth with or without CPC were immediately placed in water for 16-24h (37°C) and then tested for shear-peel bond strength. 3M™ Clarity™ Advanced Ceramic Brackets were soaked in 5 ml of each variety of CPC (mint, unflavored, melon, n=4 brackets each) for 15 minutes. Each set of soaked brackets was rinsed with DI water and examined under light for evidence of discoloration. Results: Bond strengths were analyzed (Fig.1 & Table 1, ANOVA with Tukey’s t-test, p=0.05). Within each of three adhesive groups (APCFF, APC+ and TBXT), bond strengths were not affected by CPC application. Clarity Advanced Ceramic Brackets after CPC immersion (mint, unflavored, melon) were compared to those without CPC immersion. No discoloration was visually noted in any set of brackets. Conclusions: The application of CPC fluoride treatment following orthodontic bracket bonding with different orthodontic adhesives does not negatively affect shear bond strength of the bracket to the tooth. Additionally, CPC fluoride treatment does not affect the color of Clarity Advanced Ceramic Brackets.
