Evaluation of Color Stability of 3D Printed and Machinable Restorative Materials
Objectives: To evaluate the in vitro color stability of polished 3D printed definitive restorative materials under the influence of staining solutions and UV light. Methods: A total of 108 disc-shaped specimens (3 mm thickness, 20 mm diameter) were 3D printed using the Asiga MAX printer, including Rodin Sculpture 1 and 2 (Pacdent), Flexcera (Desktop Health) (printing file version 385 and 405), Ceramic Crown (SprintRay), and GC Cerasmart (machinable). Specimens were cured in an Otoflash machine then polished. Six post-treatment groups were established: Group 1 control dry, Group 2 water submerge, Group 3 turmeric solution, Group 4 underwent thermocycler treatment (Sabri Dental Enterprises Inc., Downers Grove, IL), followed by immersion in a coffee staining solution (20 g/L). Group 5 toluidine blue (Toluidine Blue dye), and Group 6 UV light. Color changes (ΔE2000) was calculated before and after treatments using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests (α=0.05). Results: Cerasmart shows minimal color changes after most treatments, while 3D printed materials exhibited varying degrees of color change as shown in Figure 1. Control dry group preserves color best, while water, TC-coffee, TB dye, and UV light cause variable changes. Turmeric leads to significant color changes in all materials. Conclusions: In conclusion, Cerasmart showed the best color stability after treatments, while Sprintray Ceramic experienced more noticeable color changes. Control Dry minimized color changes, while turmeric, TC-Coffee and TB DYE caused the largest increases in Delta-E00 values. The study emphasizes the varying susceptibility of materials to color changes post-treatment.
