Evaluation of Flow Pressure of a Sr-Si Sealer

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the force necessary to initiate flow and examine the particle size of a novel endodontic sealer containing strontium-silicate (C-Root sealer) and compare it to a calcium-silicate based sealer (Endosequence BC sealer).
Methods: A push-flow test was devised to measure the force required to initiate sealer flowing through a glass gastight syringe with 23-gauge blunt needle (0.33 mm ID). Sealers were loaded into the syringes and subjected to testing using a universal mechanical tester (Instron 5566A with 100 N load cell), which plotted force against time. The force that initiated the flow was extracted from the load-displacement graphs. The tests were repeated 10 times for each sealer. The filler particle size of the sealer was analyzed by using SEM and capturing images of three random areas. A total of 100 particles per sealer were selected from the images, and their diameters were measured and averaged. Statistical analysis was conducted using a t-test (α=0.05).
Results: The average force needed to initiate flow for the calcium-silicate sealer was 21.51 ± 2.59 N, while the strontium-silicate sealer required only 11.00 ± 0.74 N. The average particle size for the calcium-silicate sealer was 8.05 ± 5.66 µm, compared to 1.59 ± 0.97 µm for the strontium-silicate sealer. Statistically significant differences between two tested sealers were observed in both the push-flow load (pressure) and filler particle size.
Conclusions: The strontium-silicate sealer required less force to initiate flow than the calcium-silicate sealer and exhibited a smaller average particle size. This suggests that the strontium-silicate sealer may represent a promising alternative as an obturation material.
