Exploring Artifical Intellignence as an Educational Aid for Creating Structured Concept Maps in Tobacco Cessation for Dental Students
Objectives: 1. Assess the effectiveness of ChatGPT (an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool developed by OpenAI) in assisting students to generate structured concept maps for tobacco cessation education.
2. Identify students' perception towards the use of ChatGPT in their learning process and to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
Methods: The study involved developing a formative assignment for first-year dental students to create a tobacco cessation concept map. The assignment aimed to prepare students for standardized patient encounters where they would advise patients about tobacco use.
ChatGPT was used as an instructional tool and resource provider for the assignment. The students were required to utilize ChatGPT to identify and gather pertinent information for constructing a structured concept map. The study involved obtaining the students' perceptions regarding the use of ChatGPT for this assignment. The perceptions were captured through an eight-item questionnaire and one open-ended question to evaluate their experience using ChatGPT for the assignment. Students' performance was obtained through the standardized patients' evaluation and feedback.
Results: Students generated concept maps demonstrating knowledge of the topic and the ability to make meaningful connections between the various tobacco cessation concepts. Students’ perception was positive toward the use of ChatGPT. Standardized patients’ feedback and assessment described that the students were knowledgeable about tobacco cessation process.
Conclusions: There is a need to further explore the impact of the use of AI in education. ChatGPT is a promising educational tool and there is a need to explore its potential and limitations.
