Superior Stain Prevention Efficacy of an Electric Toothbrush/Whitening Brush Head
Objectives: To evaluate the ability of an oscillating/rotating toothbrush with micro-vibrations and a whitening brush head to prevent dental stain formation over a period of 12 weeks. Methods: This was a randomized, parallel, examiner-blind, 12-week, controlled clinical trial involving 100 healthy adults with visible dental stain. Following baseline examination, a partial prophylaxis on the anterior teeth was performed to remove all extrinsic stain. Subjects were stratified according to pre-prophylaxis dental stain, smoking, consumption of coffee/tea and age and randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups: Oral-B iO oscillating/rotating toothbrush with micro-vibrations and Radiant White brush head (ORTB) or a soft manual toothbrush (Oral-B Indicator, Control). Subjects brushed teeth twice/day using a regular sodium fluoride toothpaste. The Modified Lobene composite (MLS) stain index was measured on the facial and lingual surfaces of the twelve anterior teeth at Baseline, Week-4 and Week-12. Between-groups comparisons were performed using analysis of covariance with pre-prophylaxis score as covariate. Results: Subjects’ mean age was 51 years; 73% were female and the average consumption of coffee/tea per week was 2.3 cups. Overall MLS pre-prophylaxis means were 2.00. At Week-4 and Week-12, combined facial and lingual mean MLS were 0.08 and 0.25 for the ORTB and 0.15 and 0.46 for the Control, respectively. For the facial surfaces only, mean MLS were 0.02 and 0.08 for the ORTB, and 0.06 and 0.25 for the Control at Week-4 and Week-12. The ORTB demonstrated significantly (p≤0.004) greater stain prevention effectiveness relative to the Control at Week-4 and Week-12, with 47.7% and 45.9% less MLS for combined facial & lingual surfaces and 68.8% and 68.6% less MLS for the facial surface only. Conclusions: The oscillating/rotating toothbrush with micro-vibrations and a whitening brush head exhibited superior extrinsic stain prevention effectiveness over the 12-week study period as compared to a regular manual toothbrush.
