Effect of LivFresh Dental Gel on Enamel Remineralization
Objectives: Recent studies have shown that a novel dentifrice containing activated edathamil (LivFresh®) reduced gingival inflammation and provided superior plaque control, when compared with commercially available control products, by disrupting biofilm formation on the tooth surface. LivFresh® can therefore serve as an adjunct in everyday mechanical plaque control that may not be practiced effectively by the average patient. The addition of fluoride in this novel dentifrice may facilitate tooth remineralization and increase enamel mineral density. The aim of our study was to compare the effectiveness of Livfresh toothpaste with or without Fluoride with a control fluoride-containing commercial dentifrice in the remineralization and crysttalline structure of demineralized enamel. Methods: Enamel blocs (dimensions 4 mm X 4 mm X 3 mm) per treatment were tested (LivFresh®, Commercial Toothpaste Control, LivFresh®+F). Sterile human enamel blocs were previously demineralized and scanned, and then were re-mineralized and rescanned at 8 μm resolution on a Scanco μCT40 scanner. Images were reconstructed and analyzed for enamel mineral density using the SkyScan CT-Analyser V.1.10 software (N=6/group). X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of the enamel was performed before and after demineralization and after treatment. Experimental enamel XRD patterns were identified as hydroxyapatite, and the peaks were consistent with the standard hydroxyapatite diffraction pattern (N=3/group). Results: Demineralization effectively reduced the mineral density and impaired the hydroxyapatite crystalline structure of the enamel surface. All treatments significantly increased the surface enamel mineral density of the enamel and restored the hydroxyapatite crystalline structure, with superior results for both test groups. Conclusions: All tested treatments significantly increased the surface enamel mineral density of the demineralized enamel. Preliminary data suggest that addition of fluoride in the novel dentifrice containing activated edathamil may be an effective way of increasing the enamel remineralization potential.
