Adhesion of RMGI Cement Bonding to SDF Treated Dentin

Objectives: Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is indicated for hypersensitivity reduction and it is also an antimicrobial agent with silver and fluoride ions. There is a potential to use SDF as pretreatment in different procedures as minimal invasive dentistry. This study investigated the adhesion of RMGI cement to SDF treated dentin surface during the crown cementation procedure.
Methods: SDF from Elevate Oral Care and RelyX Luting Plus cement from 3M were used in this investigation. Bovine crowns (obtained from a packing plant) were potted and polished with 120 grit sandpaper and smoothed with 320 grit sandpaper to expose dentine. Dentin were air dried, then rubbed with SDF for 10 seconds, and waited for total a minute, then rinsed with water to remove excess SDF on the dentin surface, then blot-dried to remove excess amount of water on the surface. The SDF treated and non-treated dentin were bonded to cement with 5mmx2mm PTFE molds and cured in 37C 95% RH chamber for 20 minutes, then stored in 37C DI water for at least 24 hr before adhesion strength testing. The bond strength was measured via the shear bonding testing method on an Instron tester. Adhesion strength of different procedures were compared using one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s test (p<0.05).
Results: The table shows the bond strength of procedures with/no SDF treatment

Table 1 adhesion strength for different treatments Treatment

Conclusions: This study showed there was significant difference between different procedures for adhesion strength. SDF pretreatment increased bonding strength to the dentin. There is a potential to combine the SDF pretreatment on dentin and RMGI cement in crown cementation procedure.
