Assessment of New Antimicrobial Nano Gel for Remineralization of Enamel

Objectives: To assess the remineralization potential of antimicrobial Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) on white spot lesions (WSLs) compared to and with different remineralizing agents
Methods: 180 extracted human teeth were prepared then submerged in a demineralization solution for 7 days at 37oC. The teeth were then divided into 6 different groups; each group (n=30) of MgO nanogel, GC mousse, Oral B toothpaste, GC mousse with 1% MgO NPs and Oral B with 1% MgO NPs. Teeth were tested after 2, 4 and 8 weeks for surface roughness by Profilometer , for Hardness by Vickers Hardness Test , for surface configuration by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and for amount of mineral deposition by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). Results were analyzed with Two-way ANOVA at a significance level of p< 0.05
Results: For the surface roughness test there was a statistically significant decrease in all the different groups at 4 weeks (p<0.05). Groups of combination of GC with MgO NPs and OB with MgO NPs statistically significant improved Rq values. For the Hardness test there was a statistically significant increase in the surface hardness of the groups at 4 weeks (p<0.05). Groups with MgO nanogel and GC with 1% MgO showed statistically significant higher values (p<0.05). Scanning electron microscope analysis and EDX showed a smoother surface and more mineral deposition with the MgO group and the groups of combination of GC with MgO NPs and OB with MgO NPs in the 4 and 8 weeks groups
Conclusions: MgO NP shows remarkable remineralization potential that is safe to incorporate with topical agents, and offers significant benefits of increased mineral deposition along with its antimicrobial action in regards to the treatment and prevention of WSLs.
