Impact of Familial Factors Relating to ENDS Use on Oral Health

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of familial factors related to Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) use by adolescents on oral health.
Methods: The data were obtained through the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. PATH is a longitudinal study of U.S. adults and youth. It contains self-reported information on tobacco-use patterns and associated health behaviors. Logistic regression was performed to assess the association between familial and oral health outcomes, adjusting for demographic characteristics.
Results: There were 1,021 participants aged 12-14 years included in the data for this study. Approximately 53% of the study population reported no parental discussion about using ENDS. ENDS availability at home (AOR: 1.725, 95% CI = 1.704–1.747), lack of in-house rules (AOR: 1.196, 95% CI = 1.183–1.209), having biological relatives who have ever been troubled by substance use disorders (AOR: 1.475, 95% CI = 1.461–1.488), and lack of parental reaction if found using ENDS (AOR: 1.443, 95% CI = 1.410–1.476) were associated with poor oral health. In addition, parental discussion about not using ENDS (AOR: 0.901, 95% CI = 0.894–0.909) was linked to a lower risk of having oral health issues.
Conclusions: Parental discussion and familial factors are influential in decreasing the probability of ENDS use and having better oral health. The results of this study can inform guidelines and policies regarding ENDS usage in the pediatric health care setting.
