Low-level Laser on Autogenous Bone or Deproteinized Bovine Bone

Objectives: The objective of this study will be to evaluate the effect of LLLT on critical bone healing treated with autogenous bone (AB) or deproteinzed bovine bone (DBB) at 60 days postoperative.
Methods: Sixty male rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus, Wistar) weighing 250 to 300 gr were used in this study. A critical-size bone defect (CSD) A critical size defect (CSD) with a 5 mm diameter was created in the calvaria of each animal. The animals were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups (n = 10/group): 1) Group C (control): defect filled with blood clot; 2) Group LLLT: defect filled with blood clot and application of LLLT. (GaAlAs, 780nm, 100mW, 6J, 210J/cm2); 3) Group AB: defect filled with autogenous bone graft; 4) Group ABL: defect filled with autogenous bone graft and LLLT application; 5) Group DBB: defect filled with deproteinized bovine bone (Bio-Oss Geistlich Pharma, AG, Wolhusen, Switzerland); 6) Group DBBL: defect filled with deproteinized bovine bone (Bio-Oss) and LLLT application. The variables analyzed were newly formed bone area (NFB). The parametric test ANOVA followed by Tukey's test was used.
Results: Only DBB group not present statistically significant difference of BNF in relation to C group (p < 0.05). LLLT provided bone formation in the group treated with DBB, but there was no increased bone formation in association with AB.
Conclusions: The LLLT not increased NFB when applied with AB. However, it increases bone neoformation when used alone or associated with DBB.
