Bracket Bond Strength After Fluoride Varnish or RMGI Coating Application

Objectives: Orthodontic patients are at an elevated risk for caries. Use of fluoride varnish, Vanish™ White Varnish (VWV) or RMGI coating, Vanish XT (VXT), around brackets can reduce caries risk. The objective is to determine the effect of VWV and VXT on bracket bond strength.
Methods: Products used were from 3M. Grps.1-9: Bovine teeth were pumiced and etched/primed with Transbond™ Self Etching Primer. Victory Series™ Low Profile Upper Central brackets were bonded to the enamel using APC™ Flash-Free (FF, Grps.1-3), APC PLUS (APC+, Grps.4-6) and Transbond XT (TBXT, Grps.7-9) Adhesives. All were light-cured (3-sec.mesial/3sec.distal) using Ortholux™ Luminous Curing Light (OL). Grps.1,4,7 were controls.
Grps.2,5,8: VXT was applied as a 1-2 mm band on the tooth around the bracket, making contact with the bracket base, but not onto the top, and light-cured (3-sec.mesial/3sec.distal) using OL.
Grps.3,6,9: VWV was applied to the entire tooth surface, up to the bracket, and onto the bracket base, simulating “swiping motion” application and subsequent migration.
Grp.10: VXT was tested with TBXT, applied around the bracket and tack-cured. TBXT, primer, and VXT were light-cured together.
Grp.11: VXT was tested with TBXT and applied under the bracket like a primer on etched enamel (Scotchbond™ Universal Etching Gel). TBXT and VXT were light-cured simultaneously.
Bonded teeth (37°C water, 16-24h) were tested for shear-peel bond strength.
Results: Bond strengths were analyzed (Fig.1 & Table 1, ANOVA with Tukey’s t-test, p=0.05). In each of three adhesive groups (Grps.1-3, Grps.4-6, Grps.7-9), bond strengths were not affected by VWV or VXT application (untreated=VWV=VXT).
VXT applied around the bracket during bracket bonding and cured simultaneously with the adhesive, did not affect the bond strength (Grp.10=Grp.7).
VXT applied under the bracket reduced bond strength (Grp.11Conclusions: Bond strength remains unchanged after application of either VWV or VXT coating around brackets. VXT can be applied during the bonding procedure and cured simultaneously with the adhesive.
