Extrinsic Stain Removal by Non-Peroxide Sodium Hexametaphosphate Rinse
Objectives: This randomized, examiner-blind, parallel-group, 2-week clinical study evaluated the safety and stain removal efficacy of a non-peroxide rinse containing 2% sodium hexametaphosphate compared to a positive control – dental prophylaxis.
Methods: Forty adults with established extrinsic dental stain were enrolled. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups: (HMP) a 2% sodium hexametaphosphate rinse (Crest® 3D-White™ Brilliance) along with a regular toothbrush (ADA) and a regular 0.243% sodium fluoride dentifrice (Crest® Cavity Protection) or (DP) a full-mouth dental prophylaxis with a regular toothbrush (ADA) and a regular 0.243% sodium fluoride dentifrice (Crest® Cavity Protection). The extent and severity of overall stain was measured on selected facial tooth surfaces by a trained examiner using the Modified Lobene Index, stain on approximal surfaces was evaluated using the Interproximal Modified Lobene Stain Index. Measurements were taken at Baseline and after 7 and 14-days of product use.
Results: All 40 subjects (age ranging from 19-63) completed the study. Groups were balanced on baseline demographics and stain levels. Both the HMP and DP groups showed statistically significant reduction from Baseline in Modified Lobene stain and Interproximal Modified Lobene stain (p<0.001) at Week 1 and Week 2. The median percent reductions in Lobene Composite Index were 89.6% and 25% for week 1 and 75% and 46.9% at week 2, for the DP and HMP group, respectively. Both treatments were well-tolerated.
Conclusions: Twice daily use of a 2% sodium hexametaphosphate rinse resulted in a reduction in visible overall and interproximal stain after 7 and 14-day usage period.
