Optical Properties of Monolithic Zirkonia

Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare different shading techniques (shading only one side or both sides) on optical properties and their effect on either partial stabilized or fully stabilized zirconia.
Methods: Monolithic partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ): Prettau® (PRT, Zirkonzahn) and fully stabilized zirconia (FSZ): Prettau Anterior® (PRTA, Zirkonzahn) were fabricated to 4 specimens in each subgroup with following thicknesses: 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5mm. The specimens were shaded with three layers of A3 color (Zirkonzahn Prettau color liquid). Translucency parameters (TP) were measured using reflection spectrophotometer (CM-700 d, Konica Minolta) with black and white background. MARC® Resin Calibartor (Bluelight analytics Inc.) was used to quantify the irradiance transmitted through each specimen. Two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey’s tests (p<0.05) were used to perform statistical analysis.
Results: Translucency parameters (TP) ranged followingly: from 8.9 to 16.6 with Zirkonia Prettau both sides shaded and from 9.6 to 18.1 with one side shaded specimens; from 11.0 to 19.1 with Zirkonia Prettau Anterior both sides shaded and from 11.9 to 19.4 one side shaded specimens. According to measurements, Zirkonia Prettau Anterior has significantly better translucency compared to Zirkonia Prettau and one side shaded specimens have relatively better translucency compared to both sides shaded specimens in both brands. Irradiance analysis shows that mean irradiance increases when the thickness of the specimens increases with both brands. One side shaded specimens have relatively better mean irradiance compared to both sides shaded specimens. Between translucency, irradiant energy and thickness of zirconia an inverse relationship was detected and the amount was brand dependent (p<0.05).
Conclusions: 1. Translucency depends on the brand, thickness and the color shade of the zirconia material. Zirkonia Prettau Anterior (FSZ) is statistically significantly more translucent compared to Zirkonia Prettau (PSZ).
2. Mean irradiance of monolithic zirkonia depends on the zirkonia brand, thickness of the material and the shading technique.
