Retrospective Study of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors on Implant Failure
Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate if there is an increased number of implant failures in patient who take Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) medications during implant placement. Methods: Charts of patients who have had implants placed at University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine between 2008 and 2016 have been retrospectively reviewed. Information including the use of SSRI's, date of implant placement, date of implant failure, along with other possible confounding variables have been collected and recorded. The use of SSRI medication were self reported by the patients. To ensure calibration among study team members, each member reviewed 10 charts also reviewed by another member and were evaluated for consistency. Statistical analysis will be conducted to examine the effect of the SSRI's on implant failures. Results: Two hundred eight patient charts which include the placement of 362 implants were evaluated. Of these 208 patients, 15 experienced implant failures (15 implant sites), and none of the patients that had a failure was taking SSRI medication(s) during treatment. Conclusions: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor medications do not have an observable effect on the probability of implant failure. More patients and implant sites will be evaluated to increase the sample size and reliability of the results.
