Efficacy of One-Hour Whitening Strip in Chinese Population
Objectives: Objective: This study evaluated whitening efficacy and safety of one-hour high adhesion whitening strip relative to a negative control in Chinese population. Methods: Methods: Institutional review and informed consent were obtained, and subjects with no history of previous tooth bleaching were randomly assigned to either 10% high adhesion whitening strips (Crest® 3D Whitestrips® 1 Hour Express) with a cavity protection toothpaste or just a cavity protection toothpaste. All subjects were instructed to brush twice daily, and subjects in the strips group were asked to apply one whitening strip for one hour daily for the duration of the study. Whitening efficacy of the maxillary anterior teeth was assessed instrumentally as L*a*b* color change via digital image analysis after one, two and seven treatments. Results: Results: Mean (SD) age of subjects was 36.3 (8.8) years. Relative to baseline, use of whitening strips resulted in significant (p < 0.0001) improvement of yellowness (b*) and lightness (L*) at each study visit. The adjusted change from baseline for b* was -0.947, 1.308, and -2.039 after one, two and seven treatments, respectively. The adjusted change from baseline for L* was 0.917, 1.39 and 1.868 after one, two and seven treatments, respectively. The negative control group demonstrated small but significant (p=0.027) change in L* after one, and both b* and L* after two days. No statistically significant changes (p≥0.09) were detected in the negative control group after seven days. Whitening efficacy of the whitening strip was significantly better (p<0.0001) than control at all visits for all color parameters. All products were well-tolerated, transient tooth sensitivity represented the most common adverse event, and no subject discontinued the study. Conclusions: Conclusion: This clinical research demonstrated a significant tooth color improvement in Chinese population after just one treatment with continuous advancement over time.
