Clinical Performance of a Glass Hybrid Restorative in Extended-size Class II Cavities After 1-year

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical performance of a glass hybrid restorative compared to a resin composite in the restoration of large and deep Class II cavities after 1-year.

Methods: A total of 108 extended size (the width of the proximal box not interfering with the peak of the cusps and the proximal box in occlusion) Class II lesions in 37 patients were either restored with a glass hybrid restorative (EQUIA Forte Fil with EQUIA Forte Coat /GC, Tokyo, Japan), or with a micro-hybrid resin composite (G-aenial Posterior, GC, Tokyo, Japan) in combination with selective etching (G-aenial Bond, GC, Tokyo, Japan) by two experienced operators according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Two independent examiners evaluated the restorations at baseline, 6-month and 1-year recall according to the modified US Public Health Service Criteria. Negative replicas at each recall were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate surface characteristics. Data were analyzed statistically.
Results: After 1-year, 86 restorations were evaluated in 30 patients (recall rate: 81.1%). Four glass hybrid restorations were failed; 3 were due to bulk and 1 was due to proximal fracture. Three restorations needed repair and 1 restoration required root canal treatment. Six restorations were scored as bravo also at baseline, 6-month and 1-year recalls for color (p>0.05). No significant differences were observed between the two restorative materials for the other criteria evaluated (p>0.05). SEM observations exhibited successful surface and marginal adaptation characteristics for both restorative materials at 1-year control.

Conclusions: Resin composite restorations exhibited better performance than glass hybrid restorations in large Class II cavities regarding retention rate and color after 1-year.
