Clinical Evaluation of Universal and Two Bottle Total Etch Adhesives at 5 Years
Objectives: To evaluate Scotchbond Universal (SBU) in self and total etch modes and two bottle Scotchbond MP (SBMP) used in total etch mode to restore Class V non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) Methods: 37 adult subjects were recruited after obtaining informed consent. Each subject had at least 3 NCCLs- 1.5mm deep. 137 Class V restorations were placed. The teeth were restored randomly with SBU total-etch (SBU-TE), SBU self-etch (SBU-SE) or Scotchbond MP (SBMP). All were restored with Filtek Supreme Ultra composite resin. Teeth were isolated (rubber dam) and cleaned (pumice/water). A short enamel margin bevel was prepared. All adhesives were applied following manufacturers' directions. Proper composite shade was selected, placed in 2mm increments and light-cured (Elipar S10 > 700mW/cm2). Restorations were finished with finishing burs and polished (Sof-Lex, Enhance/PoGo). Digital images were made before and after preparation, after finishing and at each recall. Patients were evaluated at baseline (2weeks after restoration), 6, 12, 24, 36, and 60 months. Each evaluation included retention, anatomic form, color match, margin integrity, margin discoloration, surface roughness, secondary caries, staining, gingival index and post-operative cold sensitivity using modified USPHS Criteria. The data were analyzed using McNemar's test (p=0.05). Results: Total of 10 restorations failed (“missing”). In the SBMP group, 85.7% 60 month retention. In the SBU-SE group, 92.9% 60 month retention. In the SBU-TE group, 97.6% 60 month retention. Conclusions: Scotchbond Universal in both total- and self-etch modes performed similarly or better than a total-etch two-bottle system
