Shear Bond Strength of OptiBond Universal to Dentin and Enamel

Objectives: OptiBond Universal (Kerr Corporation), a one-bottle universal adhesive system, was recently introduced. It is compatible with self-etch, selective-etch, and total-etch bonding protocols. The objective of this study was to measure and compare the dentin and enamel bond strength of OptiBond Universal with several other universal adhesive systems: Scotchbond Universal (3M), Prime&Bond Elect (Dentsply) and Adhese Universal (Ivoclar Vivadent).
Methods: Dentin substrates were polished with 600 grit SiC paper and bovine enamel substrates were pumice-cleaned prior to bonding. Each adhesive was applied per manufacturer’s instructions. After light-curing of the adhesive, a bonding jig (Ultradent) with a cylindrical mold (D=2.38mm) was securely placed on adhesive-covered substrate. Herculite XRV (A2 shade, Kerr) was condensed into the jig and light cured. The bonded specimens (n=6) were then stored in de-ionized water at 37oC for 24 hours before being subjected to shear force on an Instron mechanical tester at a cross-head speed of 1mm/min.
Results: The results are summarized in the table below. Statistical analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni’s method for pair-wise comparison to determine significant differences among groups (p<0.05) within each etching mode and substrate. ANOVA analysis revealed that, in total-etch mode, OptiBond Universal has significantly (p<0.05) higher shear bond strength to both dentin and enamel than all the other adhesive products with the exception of dentin bond strength for Adhese Universal. In self-etch mode, OptiBond Universal has significantly (p<0.05) higher shear bond strength to enamel than all the other adhesive products with the exception of enamel bond strength for Scotchbond Universal. There are no significant (p>0.05) differences in bond strength to dentin in self-etch mode among all adhesive products.
Conclusions: OptiBond Universal Adhesive System yields the highest shear bond strength to both dentin and enamel in both self-etch and total-etch modes among all adhesive products tested in this study. OptiBond Universal performs well in self-etch, selective-etch (self-etch on dentin and acid-etch on enamel) and total-etch modes.
