The Effect of Prophy Polishing on Stained Composite Surface of the Preveneered Stainless Steel Crowns

Objectives: The purpose is to assess the effect of using fine-, medium-, and coarse-grit prophy paste on polishing preveneered stainless steel crowns (PvSCCs) stained by grape juice.
Methods: Forty-five maxillary central incisor PvSCCs were immersed in grape juice for 30 days. All crowns were randomly assigned in to 3 groups (n=15) using fine, medium, and coarse prophy paste for polishing. Color measurement (ΔE), surface roughness (Ra) and SEM imaging were performed at Pre-stain, Post-stain, Post-polish. Statistic significance was set at P<.05.
Results: Pre-stain to post stain ΔE was 5.4 and post-stain to post-polishing the ΔE was 4.7; which both of them are ΔE>3.3. This indicated the color changed sinificantly by satining and polish alone. The overall net ΔE value (prestain to post polish) was 1.7, meaning that there was no overall perceivable color change. After polishing, the fine-grit polish resulted in a Ra value of 0.164 ± 0.054 μm, medium-grit polish was 0.229 ± 0.087 μm, and coarse-grit polish was 0.232 ± 0.105 μm. The fine-grit polish produced the least amount on increase in surface roughness. The post-polish showed significant Ra change (P<.001)
Conclusions: The composite facing on PvSCC is susceptible to grape juice stains and fine-, medium-, and coarse prophy paste can remove stains equally effective. A fine-grit prophy paste should be used to reduce the amount of surface roughness change and risk of increased bacterial retention.
