Four years Quality Assurance report on laboratory work at UABSOD
Objectives: The purpose of quality assurance (QA) setting a standard on the quality of student lab work and assuring providing high quality prosthesis for patients. It can also calibrate clinical faculty on patient care.
Methods: The updated QA manual includes lab work flow chart, lab work guide line for fixed, removable and implant prosthesis, student self-check list, QA forms and reference is sent to student and faculty at the beginning of year. Students submit lab work along with the work authorization form, patient payment card, and check list to the lab administrator to log into the EDR system and also to verify the patient’s payment. Upon completing this procedure, the lab work is sent for check by the QA faculty team, which consists of 5 Prosthodontists, each assigned once a week. Any lab work not meeting QA standards is returned to the student for correction and accompanied by the QA form filled by the QA team. If any disagreement is present between the QA team and clinical faculty, then lab work is referred to the Prosthodontic Chair. QA team leader submits QA report to the chair after calculation of QA data.
Results: 4 years QA data on Fixed and 2 years on Removable prosthodontics has been collected. D4 has higher % of QA rate on fixed , removable RPD and CD than D3. RPD has higher QA rate than Fixed and CD on both D3 & D4. D3 has higher QA in Fixed in Fall semester than in Spring semester. RPD and CD have higher QA rate in the Fall than Spring semester. Overall, the QA reject rate has shown slowly decreasing in the past 4 years.
Conclusions: QA is a useful tool for improving the standard of patient care and calibration of faculty when teaching students.
