Moisture Effect on Shear Bond Strength of Self-Adhesive Resin Cements
Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of varying dentin moisture conditions on shear bond strengths of three different self-adhesive resin cements. Methods: Human molars were sectioned, mounted and ground to a flat dentin surface by using 320, 400 and 600 grit silicon carbide paper sequentially. Dentin was treated one of three ways: blot dry, 5 second air-dry or 10 sec air-dry prior to cementation to Zirconia rods that were blasted with alumina beads (50 microns) at 1 bar pressure. Three self-adhesive resin cements; Ivocem NG (Ivoclar Vivadent), Maxcem Elite™ (Kerr) and Rely X™ Unicem 2 (3M ESPE) were tested (n=8).
The specimens were mounted and secured onto an Ultradent jig, cemented and light cured (bluepase® G2; Ivoclar Vivadent) following manufacturer’s instructions. The specimens were then stored in an incubator (37 degree C) for 24 hours. Specimens were tested using an Instron Universal Testing Machine with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min.
Mean shear bond strengths were calculated and analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test (α=0.05). Results: See table Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, there was a significant difference in shear bond strength between Ivocem NG, Maxcem Elite and Rely X Unicem 2 when using a blot dry or a 5 second air dry technique.
