Comparison of Amnion Chorion and Bovine Collagen Membrane for Socket Bone Augmentation: A Clinical study
Objectives: Studies have reported that alveolar ridge dimensions will decrease by 5-7 mm buccolingually (horizontal) and 1-4 mm apicocoronally (vertical) following dental extractions. The objective of this study is to compare the ridge dimensions in grafted extraction sockets using either amnion-chorion membrane (BioXclude) or type 1 collagen bovine membrane (Mem Lok) as a barrier. This study is a randomized clinical study.
Methods: After IRB approval, 33 subjects requiring single tooth extractions and delayed implant placement were enrolled in this study. A total of 40 extraction sites were randomized with 21 sites receiving DFDBA/MemLok membrane (controls) and 19 sites receiving DFDBA/BioXclude membrane (experimental). Some of the participating patients had more than one, non-adjacent unsalvageable tooth. Primary closure was avoided after extraction, grafting and membrane placement, leaving the socket to heal by secondary intention. Following extraction, vertical and horizontal ridge dimensions were determined using acrylic stent and UNC-15 periodontal probe. Paired t-test was used for statistical analysis
Results: The horizontal bone loss in the control group was 0.21±0.49 mm, while the experimental group gained 0.05±0.68 mm (p >0 .05). The vertical bone loss was 0.18±0.18 mm for the control group and was 0.13±0.27 mm for the experimental group (not statistically significant for both groups, p > 0.05).
Conclusions: The difference between the control and experimental group was not statistically significant in horizontal or vertical ridge dimension. Socket augmentation with both membranes was effective in preserving ridge dimensions and was favorable for subsquent implant placement.
