Comparison of Self-adhesive Resin Cements With and Without Dentin Primer
Objectives: Manufacturers have introduced self-adhesive resin bonding systems to simplify and shorten indirect restoration cementation procedures. These do not involve use of separate dentin primers, which is believed to strengthen the bond to tooth structure. This study compared bond strength of two self-adhesive resin cements: SpeedCem (SC); Unicem2 automix (U). Bond strength was measured to enamel and dentin, both with and without use of a self-etch dentin primer (Clearfill SE Protect primer, CSEP).
Methods: Extracted human molars were hemi-sectioned and embedded in epoxy using an Ultradent mold with either the enamel or dentin surface exposed by grinding. Samples were finished to a 600 grit polish.
Samples were stored in water and randomly assigned to four groups: SC with CSEP; U with CSEP; SC without CSEP; and U without CSEP. These samples were further assigned to 2 subgroups: enamel-bonded; and dentin-bonded. An Ultradent bonding jig was used to place the self-adhesive resin cements onto the tooth surface. They were self-cured for 2 minutes, followed by 20 seconds of light-curing. Samples were stored for 24 hours in water and shear bond strength tested using an Instron E3000 universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Mean values were compared with a Student’s T-Test using α=0.05.
Results: Groups with primer had significantly higher shear bond strength (SBS) than the non-primed groups by factors of 16-25X for the dentin subgroups and 6-10X for enamel subgroups. With dentin bonding, the U with SEP samples were significantly higher than the enamel subgroup with the same treatment. Dentin bonding with “U with CSEP” was significantly higher than “SC with CSEP”.
Conclusions: Use of a self-etch primer on the tooth structure, in addition to the self-adhesive resin cements, significantly increases the SBS of the “all-in-one” resin cements used in this study.
