Shear bond strength to dentin of self-adhesive cements after thermociclyng

Objectives: To evaluate the shear bond strength to dentin of self-adhesive cements after thermociclyng
Methods: 36 recently extracted caries and restoration free, human molars, were section with a slow speed saw to expose superficial dentin. Pre-made composite cilinders (2mm diameter) were cemented over dentin with a pressure of 200gr using self adhesive cements SoloCem (Coltene) and U200 (3M ESPE), and total etch resin cement, RelyX Ultimate (3M ESPE) were place over dentin following manufacturer’s instructions, 12 teeth per cement. Rely X Ultimate was bonded with total-etch bonding system Singlebond 2 (3M ESPE) also following manufacturer’s instructions. Specimens were then divided into two groups (n=6), one group was stored in water at 37 C for 30 days, and the other was thermocycled form 5 to 55 degrees with 30 seconds dwell time, for 5000 cycles. Specimens were tested in shear at 0.1 cm/min until break on an universal testing machine (Tinius Olsen H10K-S). Bond strength was calculated in MPa, data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA calculated at 0.05 significance level. Means were compared using Tukey-Kramer interval also calculated at 0.05 significance level.
Results: Means (Std Dev) are shown in table. Highest SBS was for thermocycled RelyX Ultimate. Thermocycling reduced SBS on SoloCem, but it helped increase bond strength on both 3M ESPE cements. Total etch resin cement, had statistically higher results than self-adhesive cements. Statistical difference was found between storage conditions, thermocycling produced higher SBS for some cements.
Conclusions: Total etch resin cements have higher SBS than self-adhesive cements. Thermocycling increased shear bond strength of some cements
