Bond Strengths of Cements to a New Polyetheretherketone Material

Objectives: To evaluate the bond strengths of two luting agents to polyetheretherketone material.
Methods: Two luting agents were used for this study;
Panavia F2.0 / K-etchant GEL and Clearfil Ceramic Primer (Kuraray Noritake Dental)
2 pretreatment conditions: 1. etching(+) primer(+) 2. etching(-) primer(+)

Super Bond / Red Activator and Super Bond PZ Primer (Sun Medical)
4 pretreatment conditions:
1. etching(+) primer(+) 2. etching(+) primer(-) 3. etching(-) primer(+) 4. etching(-) primer(-)

The surfaces of thirty specimens made of a newly developed polyetheretherketone material (PEEK, NISSIN DENTAL PRODUCTS INC.) were ground flat with #600-grid SiC paper and airborne-particle abraded. Then they were divided into six groups of five each. Stainless steel rods were bonded to the specimens’ surfaces using one of the two cements. The tensile bond strengths were tested after 24h water storage (37°C) using universal testing machine. These specimens were fractured under the tension at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min, and the maximum load at the fracture was recorded. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (p<0.05).
Results: The results are presented in the table below. Regardless of the pretreatment conditions, the bond strengths of Super Bond were significantly higher than those of Panavia F2.0 (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Super Bond systems showed significantly high bond strength to PEEK material.
