Korean vs. Korean-American Students’ Personality Attributions of Asian Female Faces

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the differences between native Korean (NK) and Korean-American (KA) judges in perceived personality and other attributes in Asian female faces by art, dental, and medical students.
Methods: Consistent with the psychophysical method of Giddon et al[1]. a pool of 60 photogrammetrically-standardized female Asian faces (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) was selected, from which 30 were chosen for average pleasantness and attractiveness. by 5 pre-test panelists.
Judges from three respondent professional training groups then responded by indicating the perceived magnitude of 18 personality and other attributes (athletic, masculine, feminine, competitive, sociable, likeable, attractive, distinctive, bold, proud, successful, adaptable, honest, outgoing, intelligent, calm, influential, domineering) on a polar opposite scale of 1 to 7, and then indicated the two attributes which best described each face.

[1] Anderson NK, Park M, Johnston VS, Giddon DB. Anthropometric bases of ethnic classification of Asian faces. J Dent Res 1999;78:126.
Results: Compared with NKs, the KAs judged the same Asian faces as significantly less masculine (p≤.001), more likeable (p=.006), honest (p≤.001), and intelligent (p≤.001). Contrary to the expected outcome, no significant mean difference was found among the three occupational training groups. There was, however, a significant difference between the KA and the NK in the pattern of intercorrelations among the attributes.
Conclusions: These results demonstrate that KA judges found female Asian faces to have a more positive constellation of personality attributes than did the NKs.
