Composite resin gloss with a novel polishing system

Objectives: To compare gloss produced on a composite resin (Filtek Supreme Ultra) with an experimental polisher (3M ESPE) to: 1. several commercially available finishing/polishing systems (Enhance/Pogo, Astropol, One-gloss) and 2. several polishing pastes (Enamelize, Diashine, Shofu CompoSite)
Methods: Composite resin specimens were wet polished with 320 grit SiC abrasive paper with a rotational polishing device. Specimens (n=5 per polishing system) were then polished with the composite polishing systems described in the table below for 60sec. One calibrated operator performed all polishing according to IFUs with a sweeping motion and light pressure (~100 grams). Polishing pastes were applied to a polishing brush. Specimens were cleaned with vigorous water spray and dried. Gloss measurements were measured using a gloss meter (60 degree angle). After each step of polishing (1 minute) with a polisher, the same composite specimens were then used to evaluate the sequential polisher in systems with multiple steps. This process was repeated until all polishers in the system were tested. Each finishing/polishing system was compared after 60s of polishing with each step with a Tukey post-hoc analysis (alpha=0.05).
Results: Please refer to tables below.
Conclusions: The experimental polishers achieved a similar gloss as the Enhance/Pogo system and superior gloss than the Astropol system after the second step of polishing. The experimental polishers produced equivalent gloss as CompoSite and Enamelize and significantly greater gloss than Diashine.
