Tailored Adhesion of a Novel Temporary Cement and Temporary Crown

Objectives: Goal of this study was to investigate the adhesion of an experimental temporary cement and experimental temporary crown material, as a procedural system, to dentin and core build-up (CBU) materials.
Methods: Experimental temporary cement (EXPTC, 3M Oral Care), a zinc oxide temporary cement (TempBond® NE, TBNE, Kerr), and a resin-based temporary cement (TempBond® Clear, TBC, Kerr) were used. Experimental temporary material (EXPTM, 3M Oral Care) was a paste/paste bisacrylic composite. Freshly cured 4mm diameter/2mm high buttons of EXPTM were made. Bovine teeth were ground with 120 and 320 grit silicon carbide sandpaper. Resin-based CBU, FiltekTM Z250 Universal Restorative (3M Oral Care) samples were freshly light-cured/sanded prior to cementation of EXPTM. Materials were used per their instructions-for-use. Cement was applied to EXPTM buttons and placed on dentin or CBU substrates, 250g weight was applied for 1 minute and excess cement removed. Adhesion samples were stored in 37C de-ionized water for 24h and were broken in shear mode using Instron machine.
Results: Mean values for bond strengths, including standard deviations, and mode-of-failure are summarized in following table:
Conclusions: ANOVA analysis was performed at p < 0.05 per Tukey’s pairwise comparison test. EXPTC had significantly higher adhesion to bovine dentin while was statistically the same as TBNE to CBU. The resin-based TBC had significantly higher adhesion to CBU. EXPTC cement stayed with EXPTM after adhesion test regardless of substrate used while TBNE exhibited cohesive failure when used on CBU. The adhesion profile of EXPTC/EXPTM as a procedural system suggest acceptable retention and minimal cement-remnant on abutments after a clinical crown removal.
