Shear Bond Strength of PANAVIA V5 to Highly Translucent Zirconia

Objectives: This study evaluates the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cements to highly translucent zirconia.
Methods: The SBS of new adhesive resin cement PANAVIA V5 (Kuraray Noritake Dental) was compared with that of RelyX Ultimate (3M ESPE) adhesive resin cement and two self-adhesive cements: PANAVIA SA Cement Plus (Kuraray Noritake Dental) and RelyX Unicem 2 Automix (3M ESPE). Pre-sintered KATANA Zirconia UTML (Ultra Translucent Multi-Layered, Kuraray Noritake Dental) specimens were embedded in acrylic resin, polished with 1000-grit SiC paper, and then sandblasted with 50µm alumina. Stainless steel rods (diameter 5mm) were cemented to the specimens, in conformance with the manufacturer’s instruction. SBS was measured after the specimens had been stored in 37°C water for 24 hours and then thermal cycled; TC (4°C-60°C, 1min. each, 3,000 cycles: TC3000). SBS data for each group (n=5) were measured and analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc comparisons.
Results: SBS data for each group are presented in Table 1; statistically significant differences are indicated by different letters (a or b) (P>0.05).
Conclusions: New PANAVIA V5 resin cement’s bond strength to highly translucent zirconia was significantly higher than that of RelyX Unicem 2 Automix and was no different from that of PANAVIA SA Cement Plus, after 1 day and TC3000. In addition, PANAVIA V5 had excellent bond durability, in contrast to RelyX Ultimate, whose bond strength decreased significantly after thermal cycling.
