Effect of universal primer/thermocycling on bond strength to ceramics

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chemical ingredients in the primers on the bond strength and durability of resin-based luting cements bonded to a ceramic restorative material.
Methods: Forty-five ceramic plates (10mm×10mm×2mm) were prepared from feldspathic ceramic; AAA (Kuraray Noritake), lithium disilicate ceramic; IPS e-max Press (Ivoclar-Vivadent), and zirconia ceramic; Lava (3M ESPE). Ceramic surfaces were pretreated with one of five silane coupling agents; 1. Clearfil photo bond (Kuraray Noritake) + Porcelainbond activater (PB), 2. Clearfil SE one (Kuraray Noritake) + Porcelainbond activater (SO), 3. Ceramic Primer (Kuraray Noritake) (CP), 4. Universal Primer (Tokuyama Dental) (UP), 5. Scotchbond Universal (3M ESPE) (SU). After surface treatment, a micro-bore Tygon tube with an internal diameter and height of 0.8 and 0.5 mm, respectively, was placed on each ceramic surface, and then the ceramic surfaces were filled with a resin-luting cement (Clapearl DC). After 24 hours water storage, the cemented specimens were subjected to 0, 5000, 10000 thermocycles prior to micro-shear bond strength test. Data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA and T-test with Bonferroni correction. (p<0.05).
Results: The results were shown in the table.
Conclusions: For AAA and e-max, SU was significantly lower bond strength than the other primers. On the other hand, for Lava, UP was significantly lower bond strength than the other primers. The bond strength significantly decreased over time.
