Effect of Pretreatment with Silver Fluoride/Potassium Iodide on Dentin Bonding
Objectives: This study investigates the effect of pretreatment of the dentin surface with a silver fluoride-potassium iodide product, Riva Star (RS, SDI). On the shear bond strength (SBS) of a conventional-cured glass-ionomer, a resin-modified glass-ionomer, a resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, and a conventional resin bonding material. Methods: After IRB approval, 20 extracted human molars were embedded in epoxy resin and sectioned to dentin with a slow speed diamond saw. The specimens were divided into 4 groups and 15 specimens were used for each test(n=15). The following test groups were conditioned per manufacturer’s instructions: Riva SC (RSC, SDI), Riva LC (RLC, SDI), Riva CEM (RC, SDI) and Scotchbond Universal™(SU, 3M). Dentin was pretreated with RS before application. The bonding surface was delineated by a 3.5mm hole in tape and a plastic tube (7mm diameter, 3mm height) for placement of the glass-ionomer or adhesively bonded composites. SBS testing was performed using a universal testing machine (Instron™ 5942). The SBS was determined by dividing the maximum breaking force divided by the bonding area. Results: Mean SBS and standard deviations for all test groups are listed in Table 1. There is no statistically significant difference in SBS between RLC and SU and between RSC and RC. A statistically significant difference in SBS was determined between RSC/RC compared to RLC/SU. With the pretreatment of RS, no statistically significant difference in SBS was determined for RLC, RC, and SU. A statistically significant increase in SBS was determined for RS+RSC compared to RS alone. Conclusions: Pretreatment of dentin with Riva Star does not affect the SBS of RLC, RC, and SU. An increase in SBS was determined with the use of RS+RSC, which may be due to the use of 37% phosphoric acid before RS application compared to the use of a polyacrylic acid conditioner with use of RSC alone. Results indicate that RS does not decrease dentin SBS.
