Bond Strengths of Five Adhesive Resin Cements to Zirconia

Objectives: This study evaluated the shear bond strengths of five auto-mixing adhesive resin cements {Multilink Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent), RelyX Ultimate (3M ESPE), ESTECEM (Tokuyama Dental), PANAVIA V5 (Kuraray Noritake Dental), and G-CEM LinkForce (GC)} between dual-cured foundation composite resin (UniFil Core EM, GC) and zirconia ceramic (Aadva EI, GC).
Methods: Zirconia disk specimens were sanded with grit #1,000 silicon-carbide paper (SiC), air-abraded with 50 µm alumina particles at 0.3 MPa for 15 s (AB). Other specimens were followed by application of ceramic primer obtained from same manufacturer as resin cement (AB+CP). Composite disk specimens were sanded with #1000SiC. Zirconia and composite disks were bonded together with each adhesive resin cement, and then photo-polymerized with a visible-light-curing unit for 40 s. Specimens were stored in water at 37°C for 24 hrs and/or performed thermal cycling (TC) of 10,000 times before shear bond strength testing. Means and SDs (in parenthesis) of shear bond strength (MPa) are listed in Table. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and identical letters were not significantly different by Tukey-Compromise test (p>0.05, n=7).
Results: The bond strengths of five adhesive resin cements between composite resin and primed zirconia were significantly higher than those of unprimed groups before TC. After TC, for unprimed groups, bond strength decreased significantly compared with before TC regardless of resin cement. On the other hand, two of five resin cements to primed zirconia showed insignificantly decrease of bond strength.
Conclusions: These results suggest that bond durability is different between brands of adhesive resin cements, and AB+CP is necessary for durable bonding of zirconia to foundation composite resin.
