3M True Definition 3D Dental Scanner Field Evaluation
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of restorative fit using 3M True Definition Scanner (TrueDef), which was developed by 3M ESPE as shown in Figure 1.
Methods: The field evaluation of the TrueDef Scanner was conducted by collecting and analyzing clinical data from twenty-three TrueDef systems distributed among twenty-three dentists over a period of six months. During the data collection period, the study was focused on the number of units scanned, units seated, whether the case was successful and whether a reappointment was necessary.
Results: As shown in Table 1 and Figure 2, there were 768 cases scanned (a mixture of single units and multi-unit bridges). The total restorative units actually scanned were 992 and the total units seated were 833. The analysis shows that the average success rate is 99.8% as listed in Table 2. For a confidence level of 95%, the case success confidence interval is from 99.1% to 100.0%.
We also collected the TrueDef scan time for all the cases. The average scan time for a quadrant was 2.29mins, whereas a full arch was 3.59mins, as shown in Table 1.
Conclusion: From the analysis of the field data, 3M True Definition scanner demonstrated reliable field test results and clinical acceptable scan speed.
