Staining of Resin Composites

Objective: To study the color change of dental composite materials after red wine staining. Methods: Discs of 15mm in diameter and 1mm thick were made from nine composite materials (Shade A2 or A2 Body, n=5 for each material):  Beautifil II (Shofu), Estelite Sigma Quick (Tokuyama), Esthet-X HD (Dentsply), Filtek Supreme Ultra (3M), Herculite Ultra (Kerr), Kalore (GC), N’Durance (Septodont), TPH Spectra LV (Dentsply) and Znano (Danville). The discs were post-treated in DI water at 37C for at least 24 hours before staining. Then, the treated specimens were subjected to red wine staining (Cashmere by Cline Cellars) at the room temperature for 24 hours. After soaking for 24 hours at room temperature each chip was vigorously rinsed under water for approximately 5 seconds on both sides, then blotted dry with Kimwipe tissue paper. Color was assessed in the CIE Lab color space using an X-Rite Color Eye (Gretag Macbeth) before and after staining. Color changes were compared among all the groups using Tukey’s test. Results: Color changes are N'Durance 1.08(a), Estelite1.17(a), TPH 1.49(a), Esthet-X 1.50(a), Znano 1.52(a), Herculite 1.64(a), Filtek 3.30(b), Beautifil 6.42(c), Kalore 7.02(c). All groups of rein composite materials showed statistically significant changes in overall color after staining, from ΔE as 1.1 for N’Durance, to ΔE as 7.0 for Kalore. The change in yellowness (Δb) was mainly accounted for the color shift after staining. Color change was more significant for Filtek, Beautiful II and Kalore than other materials (p<0.05). Conclusion: The stain resistance of Filtek, Beautifil II and Kalore materials is inferior to that of other resin composites subjected to a dietary staining challenge.
