Fluoride release from different thickness specimens of dental restorative materials

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate fluoride release and recharge ability from restorative materials on different thickness specimens.

Materials and Methods: Two glass ionomer cements (Fuji fil LC: FL; GC, Fuji IX: FN; GC), a fluoride-containing coating material (Clinpro XT Varnish: CL; 3M ESPE) and a fluoride-containing bonding agent (Bond Force: BF; Tokuyama Dental) were used in this study.  Two different thickness specimens (9 mm diameter x 3 mm thickness: Thick specimen, 10 mm diameter x 0.25 mm (250 µm) thickness: Thin specimen) of each material were made.  Six specimens were used for each material and each thickness.  Each material was cured and then stored distilled water at 37°C.  Amount of released fluoride from material was measured every 24 hours used by fluoride electrode with TISAB III.  At 21 days after starting storage of specimens (21d), each specimen was immersed into 1000 ppmF (0.21% NaF) solution for 5 minutes, and then rinsed with distilled water for 30 seconds.  After that, each specimen was stored distilled water and measured amount of fluoride same as before NaF immersion.  Data were analyzed by Games-Howell test (p>0.05).

Results: There was no significant difference between Thick and Thin specimens of each material before or after NaF immersion.  For comparison of time at 21d and 22d, increasing fluoride release from material was indicated on all materials and both thickness.

Conclusions: The results of this study showed that thickness of specimen was not affected to amount of fluoride release from material.
