Validity and Reliability of the Short Form of the Chronic Oral Mucosal Diseases Questionnaire (COMDQ-15) in an Irish Population With Oral Lichen Planus
Objectives: To investigate the preliminary psychometric properties, namely validity and reliability of the short form of the Chronic Oral Mucosal Diseases Questionnaire (COMDQ-15) in an Irish population living with oral lichen planus (OLP). Methods: Patients with OLP were recruited from the Oral Medicine Unit at the Cork University Dental School and Hospital. Following routine clinical review, participants completed Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and COMDQ-15 questionnaires. Construct validity and internal consistency reliability of COMDQ-15 weresubsequently assessed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha respectively. Results: Fifty patients with various forms of OLP were recruited. The majority (n = 39) were female and the mean age was 63.4. COMDQ-15 demonstrated moderate to good convergent validity with OHIP-14 total and VAS however there was more variability between subscale scores. The ‘Patient Support’ subscale was weakly correlated with all OHIP domains and VAS (0.08 – 0.32). COMDQ-15 had good internal consistency reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.89. Conclusions: COMDQ-15 is valid and reliable for use as a patient reported outcome measure in Irish patients living with OLP. Further psychometric testing is recommended to explore other facets of validity and reliability, along with responsiveness. As a brief and user-friendly tool, it’s employment in clinical practice and research is to be encouraged.
