Oral Health in Adults With Cystic Fibrosis – an Early Look at our Participants

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of participants recruited to date to the Oral Health in Cystic Fibrosis study.
Methods: We examined adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) who were attending the CF Adult Day Unit in Cork University Hospital. These participants were given information about the study and provided written consent. They completed a questionnaire collecting information about their systemic health, oral hygiene habits, and dietary habits. A dental examination was then conducted to collect data around their past and present caries experience, periodontal health and the prevalence of development defects in their dentition.
Results: To date 62 adults with CF have participated. 57% of these are male. The median age is 30 (IQR 24-34) with a range of 18 to 62. One participant was a current smoker and eight more were former smokers. 21% of participants have Cystic Fibrosis related Diabetes (CFRD). 19% of participants had either osteopenia or osteoporosis and 9% were taking bisphosphonates. 25% of participants were taking nutritional supplements. The mean bleeding on probing score was 32% (SD 7.8). One patient had a periodontal pocket of greater than 6mm. 22.6% of participants had no restorations. The median number of restored teeth was 6 (IQR 1,8). 34% of participants had lost a tooth due to caries in the past.
Conclusions: The proportion of young adults with dentally-relevant systemic conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis is higher among people with Cystic Fibrosis than you would see in a similarly aged population without CF. With the increasing life span of this group of people, dentists are more likely to encounter a patient that has cystic fibrosis and they should be aware of the co-morbidities which may impact on their dental health and dental treatment.
