Periodontal and Oral Hygiene Status of People With Cystic Fibrosis- a Systematic Review
Objectives: The objective of this systematic review is to critically evaluate the literature on periodontal and oral hygiene status in people with cystic fibrosis (PWCF), in order to see if this group are at increased risk of periodontal disease.
Methods: Data Sources:
A systematic review of English articles using Scopus, MEDLINE via Ebsco, Embase, Cochrane and Web of Science from 1960 to 2020, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. Additional studies were identified by searching bibliographies in returned articles.

Study Selection:
Studies that were of case–control or cohort or cross-sectional designs were included. Studies were included if they directly examined an association between cystic fibrosis and oral hygiene or gingival or periodontal health
Results: 13 studies were included in the review
A total of 792 People with Cystic Fibrosis were examined.
The results were conflicting, with some showing lower levels of plaque and gingivitis in PWCF, however some studies showed they had greater levels of plaque and gingivitis.
Conclusions: There are conflicting results about the prevalence and risk of periodontal diseases in the Cystic Fibrosis population.
There is a need for high quality reproducible studies to investigate the oral hygiene levels and periodontal status of people with CF, especially adults, in order to ascertain their risk of periodontal disease.
