Effects of Antiseptic Mouthwashes on Physical Properties of Universal Composites
Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effects of antiseptic mouthwashes with different formulations on the surface roughness and color stability of universal composites.
Methods: Three universal composites (G-aeniel A'chord, GCA; Filtek Ultimate, FU; Clearfil Majesty ES-2, CM) were used to prepare 144 specimens (n=16). Antiseptic mouthwashes (Kloroben, Glimo Care, and Tanflex) were used as antiseptic mouthwashes (n=16). The surface roughness (Ra) of the composites was measured with a profilometer (SJ-301R, Mitutoyo), and color changes (ΔE00) were analyzed using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V) before and after immersion in the mouthwash. Statistical analyses were performed using the IBM SPSS (Version 29.0.0.0) program. T-tests and Wilcoxon tests were used for comparisons within groups, and one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and post-hoc Tukey tests were applied for intergroup comparisons (p<0.05).
Results: The GCA and FU groups' initial and post-gargle Ra values were comparable. Ra values in the Glimo group were statistically lower than the starting values in the CM group (p=0.028). In every composite group, the Ra values obtained following the three gargle applications were comparable. Only the Glimo group's ΔE00 values differed significantly from the Tanflex group in CM. All Filtek groups showed comparable ΔE00 values. The Glimo group's ΔE00 values in GCA differed significantly from the Andorex and Tanflex groups'. The ΔE00 of the Tanflex and Andorex groups did not differ significantly.
Conclusions: This study demonstrates that antiseptic mouthwashes can significantly affect the physical properties of universal composites. These findings suggest that the formulation of mouthwashes plays a critical role in maintaining the physical integrity of restorative materials.
