Video Quality Asessment About General Anesthesia on YouTube and TikTok

Objectives: There are a lot of parents and students that use social media for information such as Youtube and Tiktok. On these platforms, many videos come up when searched ‘’general anesthesia in pediatric dentistry’’. But no research has looked at the quality and reliability of these videos in these platforms and compare the outcomes. The aim of this research is to determine the quality of the videos on this topic to see if it is beneficial to parents and students.
Methods: ‘’General anesthesia in pediatric dentistry’ was searched on platforms and total of 200 videos were looked at for this research (100 videos on YouTube, 100 videos on Tiktok). Between these platforms, 44 Youtube videos and 38 TikTok videos were included due to off-topic exclusions. Video length, number of likes, comments and views, JAMA and GQS scores were analyzed for each video.
Results: The data of the study was analyzed with the SPSS IBM 30.0 data package program and worked at a %95 confidence level (p=0,05). Normality test was done with Shapiro Wilk’s (n<50 for groups). Accordingly, 2-group comparisons of variables that did not show normal distribution were done with Mann-Whiney U test. Most common video profile was found %84 by clinics on YouTube and %42 by dentists on TikTok. Median JAMA and GQS scores were found to be 2-3 and 2-1 respectively for YouTube and TikTok. Significant difference was found between platforms for video length, number of likes, comments and views and GQS scores. No significant difference was found for JAMA scores (p>0,05).
Conclusions: Quality of YouTube videos were found moderate whereas quality of TikTok videos were found slightly useful. Each platform contained off-topic videos on the search thus making the information harder to reach. More informative videos by professionals should be uploaded to these platforms to improve sharing of quality information.
