Calcium Phosphosilicate Paste and Laser (980 Nanometers) in Dentin Hypersensitivity

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the association of prophylactic paste with calcium and sodium phosphosilicate (NUPRO®) and diode laser (980nm) when compared to the isolated use of NUPRO® in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH)
Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, split-mouth controlled clinical trial in which 26 teeth with DH were divided into two groups: prophylaxis with NUPRO® prophylactic paste or diode laser irradiation (980 nm - applied with one Watt of power, with a 400 micrometer fiber, for 2x10 seconds, with sweeping movements) followed by prophylaxis with NUPRO prophylactic paste (Laser+NUPRO). Participants were evaluated for dentin sensitivity (Pain) levels (evaporative and tactile tests) 5 minutes after and on days 7, 14, and 30. Two treatment sessions were performed, with a 1-week interval between them. Analyses at different times in each group were conducted using the Friedman and Post-Hoc Durbin-Conover tests. The Wilcoxon test was used for comparison between groups . The significance level of 5% was adopted.
Results: It was observed that at all evaluation times, a reduction in DH was observed in relation to the baseline (p < 0.05) when the evaporative stimulus was evaluated. When analyzing the tactile stimulus, the median values for the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scale were 1 and 0, for the NUPRO and Laser+NUPRO groups, respectively; however, only the Laser+NUPRO group showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.021) after 30 days. When comparing the two experimental groups, there was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) in any of the time intervals evaluated in both stimuli.
Conclusions: It can be concluded that both treatments showed similar results in reducing DH when compared to evaporative tests, however, when compared to tactile stimulation, after 30 days, only the combination of the two therapies showed a reduction in dentin hypersensitivity.
