Can the Use of Chewies Influence Therapy With Clear Aligners?
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to verify whether the use of Chewies brings benefits to orthodontic treatment with aligners in adult patients (permanent dentition), considering the use of these chewables at different times of use and also the occurrences of out of tracking at different stages of therapy. Methods: 103 patients using aligners were investigated, divided into 3 groups using these devices in 3 different periods of the treatment: stages 1 to 8, 9 to 16 and 17 onwards. Data was collected between 2020 and 2024 from patients using Invisalign, Clear Correct, CTOR aligners and Imagitec aligners. Patients in group 1 did not use Chewies. Patients in groups 2 and 3 received information about the use of these chewies, highlighting that they would be important to improve the adaptation of the aligners and also stimulate tooth movement. During each consultation, patients received the same information with the aim of encouraging their use. Out of tracking was considered to be a gap greater than 0.3 mm in more than one tooth. All occurrences were mentioned in the patient's medical records. Results: Patients in group 1, at the beginning of therapy – stages 1 to 8, presented results very similar to those of groups 2 and 3. However, as treatment progressed, the numbers began to change. Between stages 9 and 16, a significant increase in out-of-tracking occurrences was observed, which was even more noticeable when the more advanced stages were considered. Observe the data in table 1. Conclusions: According to the numbers shown in this study, it can be stated that the use of Chewies brought significant improvements in the adaptation of the aligners, especially in more advanced stages of treatment. This improvement of the tracking makes the treatment more predictable and can reduce the time of therapy. However, some biases may have influenced the results, which suggests further research so that the results are not contaminated by secondary factors.
