Resin Surface Characteristics After Disinfection With a Vinegar-Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate changes in the surface characteristics of conventional and 3D-printed denture base resins when disinfected with a vinegar-hydrogen peroxide (VHP) mixture. Methods: 50 disk-shaped Ø10×2-mm specimens were fabricated using either microwave-processed (Ondacryl) or 3-D printed acrylic resin (Prizma Bio Denture) and immersed for 900 minutes (simulating 90 daily disinfections) in the following solutions (N=10): distilled water; 0.5% sodium hypochlorite; hydrogen peroxide and water dilution in a 1:1 ratio; vinegar and water dilution in a 1:1 ratio; VHP mixture in a 1:1 ratio. Surface roughness, Knoop microhardness, surface free energy, color alteration by spectrophotometry, and surface topographic analysis by scanning electron microscopy were assessed before and after the immersions. Results were compared using the 2-way ANOVA for repeated measures. Results: Surface roughness, microhardness, and surface color did not change (P>.05) among the solutions and times. Surface free energy and its dispersive component increased (P<.05) for all solutions. Even in low concentrations, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and vinegar solutions altered the resin microtopography over time. Water and VHP mixture did not degrade microtopography. Conclusions: The vinegar-hydrogen peroxide mixture was not deleterious to conventional and 3-D printed denture base resin surfaces.
