Compressive Strength of a New Glass Hybrid Material

Objectives: The recent introduction of a Glass Hybrid Material (GHM) in powder and liquid (P/L) form prompted this study of its compressive strength. The objective was to evaluate the compressive strength of 2 GHM, presented in encapsulated or P/L form, compared to 3 Glass Ionomer Cements (GIC) in P/L form.
Methods: The materials tested were, GHM: Gold Label Hybrid (GLH - P/L - GC) which was the test group and Equia Forte (EF encapsulated - GC); GIC P/L: GlasIonomer FX Ultra (GFXU - Shofu), Gold Label 9 (GL9 - GC) and Ketac Molar (KM - 3M). The tests followed ISO 9917-1:2007 standards. The materials were handled according to the manufacturers’ instructions. The test specimens, n = 5, were made from a steel matrix with dimensions of 6 mm in height and 4 mm in diameter. The mold and plates were tightened with screw clamps for a maximum of 120 seconds and the entire assembly was transferred to the cabinet for 1 hour. The specimens were then stored in distilled water at 37°C for 23 hours before carrying out the test. Compression tests were carried out on a universal testing machine (Kratos equipment, K5000, Brazil) with a 200 KgF load cell, at a speed of 0.75 mm/min. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher's post hoc test (p<0.05).
Results: The compressive strength MPa means (standard deviation) were: EF 195.28 (9.49) a; GLH 189.56 (14.10) a; GFXU 150.54 (19.02) b; KM 134.69 (12.09) bc, GL9 129.52 (12.33) c. Different letters show statistically significant difference.
Conclusions: It can be concluded that the new P/L Glass Hybrid Material GLH proved to be a promising material, with behavior similar to encapsulated EF, which presented the best performances.
