Physicochemical Properties and Bond Strenght of Ready-to-use Bioceramic Endodontic Sealers

Objectives: AH Plus Bioceramic (AHPBC, Dentsply, Switzerland) is a ready-to-use bioceramic sealer composed of tricalcium silicate, zirconium dioxide and thickening agents. This study evaluated setting time (ST), flow, radiopacity, solubility and bond strength (BS) of AHPBC, in comparison to ready-to-use bioceramic Bio-C Sealer (BCS, Angelus, Brazil) and AH Plus (AHP, Dentsply, Germany).
Methods: ST and flow were evaluated according to ISO-6879:2012. Radiopacity was evaluated in mm of aluminum. Solubility was analyzed according to ISO-6876, after 7 days of immersion in distilled water. BS was evaluated in bovine dentin discs 2mm thick and 1.5mm in diameter, using a mechanical testing machine (Emic DL 2000). Antibiofilm activity was evaluated by direct contact with Enterococcus faecalis biofilm. Material contact was performed after setting for 48 h and eluted from fresh sealers (50 mg/mL), and colony-forming units were counted. The data obtained were subjected to the normality test, ANOVA and Turkey (α=0.05).
Results: ST was lowest for AHPBC, followed by BCS, and higher for AHP (p<0.05). Greater flow was observed for BCS followed by AHPBC (p<0.05). Radiopacity was lowest for BCS (p<0.05), followed by AHPBC and higher for AHP (p<0.05), all above 3 mm Al. Solubility was similar for BCS and AHPBC (p>0.05), being higher than AHP (p<0.05). BCS and AHPBC had solubility above recommended by ISO. There was no difference for BS between BCS and AHP (p>0.05), being higher than AHPBC (p<0.05). AHPBC and BCS eliminated biofilm in the eluted of fresh sealers, and showed greater antibiofilm activity than AHP after setting (p>0.05).
Conclusions: It is concluded that AH Plus Bioceramic has setting time and bond strength with dentin lower than Bio-C Sealer and AH Plus. AH Plus Bioceramic shows adequate values of flow, radiopacity and antibiofilm activity, and solubility above that recommended by ISO standards.
