Color Stability of 3D Printed Resin-Based Composite Crown Materials

Objectives: As new 3D printing materials emerge in use as permanent crowns, concerns arise regarding their clinical performance, especially concerning color stability. This study investigates the color stability of three 3D printed dental restorations exposed to staining solutions and UV light, aiming to provide insights into their long-term performance.
Methods: Three materials (Rodin Sculpture, Myerson Trusana, and Saremco Crowntec) were printed using Asiga MAX DLP printer according to manufacturer instructions. Each material had 30 disc specimens (2.00 mm thickness, 20.00 mm diameter) subjected to three different post treatments, control (submerging in water for 24±1 hours), UV exposure, and dye staining, with 10 discs in each sub-group. Color coordinates (L*, a*, b*) of the specimens were measured using X-Rite Ci7600 spectrophotometer and Color iControl software before and after treatment. For the Dye group, each specimen was submerged in 25 mL of 0.1 mg/L toluidine blue dye solution. After 24±1 hours, the test specimens were rinsed with water, brushed, rinsed with water, and then air blow-dried. UV group specimens were exposed to a few UV irradiation intervals with a distance of 50 mm until a total radiant exposure of 8 hours. Color comparison with control groups ΔE, ΔE2000, and ΔEab were calculated. Two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test of the color differences was performed using JMP Pro 16 (α=0.05).
Results: Table 1 shows the color differences comparison after treatment. No significant difference in color change was found between aging groups (p=0.47) and tested materials (p=0.07).
Conclusions: There is no significant different color change among control, UV exposure, and dye treatment for all tested materials. Rodin Sculpture and Trusana showed very good color match compared to control, while CrownTec showed acceptable color match.
