Surface Microhardness of a new Glass Hybrid Material and GICs

Objectives: A new Glass Hybrid Material (GHM) has been introduced in powder and liquid (P/L) form. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface microhardness (SM) of 2 GHM, as P/L and encapsulated forms, compared to 3 Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) in P/L form.
Methods: The specimens were made from a steel matrix with internal dimensions of 3mm thick and 6mm in diameter. The specimens were handled according to each manufacturer’s design, n=5. The GHM was Gold Label Hybrid (GLH, P/L - GC) and Equia Forte (EF, encapsulated - GC). On the other hand, GICs P/L tested were: GlasIonomer FX Ultra (GFXU - Shofu), Gold Label 9 (GL9 - GC) and Ketac Molar (KM - 3M). These specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 7 days, incorporated into an acrylic base, and polished with a 1200 grit sandpaper. The assessments of SM were performed taken with a Knopp indenter, applying a static of 25g for 30s and performing 3 indentations at the center of the specimens with a 100-micrometer spacing. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher’s post hoc test (p<0.05).
Results: The following KHN results means (standard deviation) were found: EF 218.32 (19.03) a, GFXU 207.12 (12.84) ab, GL9 192.36 (17.22) bc, GLH 178.62 (5.39) c and KM 170.96 (24.90) c. Different letters show statistically significant difference.
Conclusions: Thus, it can be concluded that the encapsulated GHM EF showed better performance, similar to GIC GFXU and the new P/L GHM GLH demonstrated to be a promising material, with behavior similar to the established GICs GL9 and KM.
