Antimicrobial Effect of Cnidoscolus Aconitifolius and Chayamansa on Porphyromona Gingivalis
Objectives: To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of C. aconitifolius and C. chyamansa against P. gingivalis, a periodontopathogenic bacterium, and to evaluate their cytotoxicity in fibroblasts and CACO-2 cells. Methods: Ethanolic extracts of each plant were made and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated by plaque diffusion method, both extracts showed antimicrobial activity being C. chyamansa superior to C. aconitifolius. For the cytotoxicity assay, the micro dilution method was used and both extracts were evaluated in gingival fibroblasts and CaCo-2 cells. Results: It was found that the extracts of C. aconitifulus and C. chayamanase presented antimicrobial activity of 70% and 83% respectively, against P. gingivalis compared to chlorhexidine, while the response observed in the fibroblast and CACO-2 cell lines, the extract of C. aconitifulus had the highest cell viability observed in the fibroblast line as well as the highest cytotoxic activity against the CACO-2 line. Conclusions: Ethanolic extracts of C. aconitifolius and C. chyamansa exhibit antimicrobial activity against P. gingivalis and no cytotoxicity to gingival fibroblast cell lines.
