Study on the Efficacy of Whitening and Remineralization of Whitening Toothpaste Containing SHMP

Objectives: To confirm the efficacy of 24 hours stain prevention and remineralization of tooth surface of Himalaya Pinksalt Whitening ToothpasteTM(HPW) and Euthymol Whitening ToothpasteTM(EW) and to measure the whitening efficacy.
Methods: (in-vitro)Bovine enamel specimens were prepared, etched with 0.1 M lactic acid, and dried(baseline L*a*b color, Spectrophotometer NF555). The specimens were treated for 2 minutes using 33%(w/w) toothpaste slurries, shaken for 24 hours in simulated oral environment, stained with 5% coffee solution for 30 minutes and then measured the changed L*a*b color. Separately, lesion enamel specimens were measured initial hardness by Vicker’s hardness tester. The specimens were processed by pH cycling method with 33% toothpaste slurries and then measured final hardness. Experiments are conducted for HPW, EW and LG regular toothpaste(LGR). (in-vivo)Whitening efficacy of HPW containing sodium hexametaphosphate(SHMP) and sodium fluoride(NaF) and LGR containing NaF was assessed for 2 weeks with 92 volunteers by Vita Classic Shade Guide and by Easy Shade V. Statistical significance was verified using one-way ANOVA and paired t-test.
Results: HPW and EW showed up to 38% and 40 % prevention of coffee stain during 24 hours and about 2 times strengthening of enamel comparing with LGR. It meant that SHMP strongly attached to tooth surface, strengthen enamel and last for 24 hours. Also, it showed whitening efficacy by improving the shade guide by 1.42, 1.93 levels when used HPW for 1, 2 week, respectively, and showed results that were 9.65 times brighter than LGR during the 2-week use period. CIE Lab*(ΔE) color change was 6.17 and 9.34, LGR, HPW respectively. All change was statistically significance compared to LGR.
Conclusions: Whitening efficacy of newly developed whitening toothpaste containing SHMP and NaF is clinically proven after 1 week. Also, it showed 24 hours of stain resistance and enamel strengthening efficacy when compared to other toothpaste.
